If you want to sponsor your wife or husband on a UAE family visa, your marriage certificate is one of the most important documents in the file. When the marriage was registered outside the UAE, the certificate must be attested before UAE authorities will accept it. This guide explains why, how the attestation chain works and how to avoid common delays.
Why attestation is needed for a spouse visa
The family visa is based on proof of the relationship between the sponsor and each family member. For a spouse, that proof is the marriage certificate. Attestation is how the UAE confirms that a foreign document is genuine: each authority in the chain checks the signature and stamp of the one before it. Without a complete attestation, the spouse visa application is usually not accepted. Read more about the full process in our guide on sponsoring your wife or spouse.
The attestation chain, step by step
For a certificate issued abroad, the usual chain is:
- Notary or home-country authority. The certificate is first verified locally, by a notary or the authority that issued or registers marriages.
- Home-country foreign ministry. The foreign ministry of the country where the marriage was registered attests the document.
- UAE embassy in that country. The UAE embassy or consulate in the issuing country attests it next.
- UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in the UAE. The final attestation is done by MOFA inside the UAE.
Some countries add extra steps before the foreign ministry. For example, in some countries the document must first go through a state-level office or a home department. The exact steps vary by country and can change, so we confirm the current chain for your country before you start.
Legal Arabic translation
After attestation is complete, a certificate that is not already in Arabic must be translated into Arabic by a legal translator. The translation is usually done after the final MOFA attestation, so that the stamps are included. Our legal translation service can handle this as part of your file.
How long does attestation take?
Timing varies a lot by country. In some cases the full chain takes about a week; in others it can take several weeks, especially when extra home-country steps are needed or the document must be sent abroad. We cannot guarantee processing times set by government offices, but we can tell you what to expect for your country before you begin.
Marriages registered in the UAE
If your marriage was registered in the UAE, for example in a UAE court, the certificate is a UAE document. It usually does not need attestation from a foreign country or a UAE embassy abroad. Depending on the case, it may still need a local step or a translation, so we check your certificate before you apply.
Practical tips
- Start early. Begin attestation before you need the visa, ideally while you or a relative is still in the home country.
- Check the names. Make sure the names on the certificate match the passports exactly. Spelling differences can cause delays.
- Keep the originals safe. Store the attested original carefully and keep clear scans. You may need it again for future applications, such as a newborn visa.
- Attest other certificates at the same time. If your children were born abroad, their birth certificates also need attestation and Arabic translation.
