Many expat parents in the UAE wonder how long their children can stay on the family visa, especially as a son nears the end of school or university. The good news is that the UAE rules are generous and fairly clear. This guide explains the age limits for sons and daughters, the special cases, and what to plan for when a son turns 25.
The age limits at a glance
| Child | Can be sponsored on the family visa |
|---|---|
| Sons | Until the age of 25 |
| Unmarried daughters | No age limit |
| Children with disabilities | At any age |
| Stepchildren and adopted children | Usually with special approval |
These rules apply in addition to the sponsor's own eligibility, such as the salary and housing requirements. You can check the salary rule in our guide on the family visa salary requirement.
Sons: sponsored until 25
A sponsor can keep a son on the family visa until he reaches 25. This gives most young men enough time to finish school and university while living with their family in the UAE. Keep his passport and Emirates ID valid during this time, and renew them on schedule.
Family visa holders can also work in the UAE once the employer obtains a work permit for them. This means a son on your family visa can take a job without changing his residence, as long as his employer arranges the permit.
When a son turns 25
Once a son turns 25, he usually cannot stay on the family visa. He needs his own residence, and the most common options are:
- Employment visa, sponsored by his employer in the UAE
- Student visa, if he is still studying at a UAE university that can sponsor students
- Other options, such as an investor or freelance residence, depending on his situation
Rules on what happens at 25 and any grace period can change, so we confirm the current rule for your case before you pay. It is wise to plan a few months ahead of his 25th birthday, and to check the timing of your next renewal.
Daughters and children with disabilities
Unmarried daughters can be sponsored on the family visa with no age limit. If a daughter marries, her husband would usually become her sponsor.
Children with disabilities can be sponsored at any age. Supporting documents, such as a medical report, are usually needed to show the child's condition.
Stepchildren and adopted children
Stepchildren and adopted children can often be sponsored, but they usually need special approval. In many cases the authorities ask for extra documents, such as proof of legal custody, the consent of the other biological parent, or an adoption order. The exact requirements depend on the case, so we review your documents before applying.
Documents and the medical test
- Birth certificates issued abroad must be attested in the home country, by the UAE embassy there and by UAE MOFA, then translated into Arabic. See our certificate attestation service.
- Passports valid for the residence period, with recent photos.
- Medical test is only needed for children aged 18 and over. Children under 18 skip the medical test.
- Health insurance is usually required for each child in most emirates.
UAE residence is digital, so your children will not get a sticker in their passports. Their Emirates IDs and the digital record show their status.
