Salary is the first thing the authorities look at when you apply to sponsor your family in the UAE. The good news is that the rule for a spouse and children is fairly simple. This guide explains the commonly applied salary threshold, the documents that prove it, and the cases where different rules apply. Rules can change and can differ slightly between emirates, so we always confirm the current rule for your case before you pay anything.
The basic salary rule
For a UAE resident employee who wants to sponsor a wife (or husband) and children, the threshold most commonly applied is:
- AED 4,000 per month total salary, or
- AED 3,000 per month plus accommodation provided by your employer.
In most cases this means your total monthly salary as shown on your salary certificate or labour contract, not only your basic salary. Allowances such as housing and transport are usually counted when they are part of your official package. If your figures are close to the limit, send them to us and we will check them against the current rule before you apply.
How you prove your salary and housing
The immigration authorities need official proof. In most applications this includes:
- Salary certificate from your employer, recent and addressed for the visa application, or your labour contract showing your monthly salary.
- Tenancy contract for your home, registered where required (for example Ejari in Dubai). If your employer provides your accommodation, a letter or contract showing this is usually needed instead.
- Your passport, residence details and Emirates ID.
- Sometimes recent bank statements, especially when the salary is paid in a way that is not obvious from the certificate.

Can a woman sponsor her family?
Yes, in many cases. A working woman resident in the UAE can apply to sponsor her husband and children when she meets the salary and housing conditions. In practice, approval for a husband sponsored by his wife depends on the authorities, and some emirates or job categories may ask for a higher salary or extra documents. We check your profile first so you know what to expect before you start.
Investors, partners and Golden Visa holders
Investors and business partners
If you hold residence as an investor or partner in a UAE company, your income is usually shown through your trade licence and company documents rather than a salary certificate. The authorities may look at the company and your share in it. See our investor family visa service for how this works.
Golden Visa holders
Golden Visa holders are generally exempt from the standard salary threshold when sponsoring their family, and can usually sponsor a wider circle of relatives. Your own Golden Visa conditions still need to be valid.
Sponsoring parents needs more
The AED 4,000 rule is for a spouse and children. Sponsoring your mother or father is treated differently, with a much higher income level commonly required, plus suitable housing and health insurance. Read our guide on how to sponsor your parents in the UAE for details.
